Matthew Hernandez, Braulio Alonso High School, Wins Positive Coaching Alliance-Tampa Bay’s Regional Double-Goal Coach® Award

02.20.2020

February 2020, Tampa, FL – Matthew Hernandez, flag football coach at Braulio Alonso High School, is one of five Regional Winners for Positive Coaching Alliance-Tampa Bay’s Double-Goal Coach® Awards presented for his positive impact on youth in sports.

The Double-Goal Coach® Awards recognize coaches who strive to win while also pursuing the important goal of teaching life lessons through sports. The chapter award includes a certificate, two tickets to a Tampa Bay Lightning game, a suite to a Tampa Bay Rays game, and recognition within the websites and newsletters of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a national non-profit developing Better Athletes, Better People through youth and high school sports.

“Coach Hernandez communicates team goals,” said Ginger Bozied, parent of a varsity player. “The girls know what they’re working for, and they work hard to achieve those goals within the family-type atmosphere created by Coach.”

Hernandez is beginning his 13th year as head coach at Alonso High School. His teams won back to back Class 2A state titles in 2018 and 2019. “Coach stands out in a crowd, not because he is screaming, but quite the opposite,” said Chris Kwan, parent of a varsity player. “He maintains his composure and coaches with the most positive and encouraging energy and coaching style my daughter has ever experienced.”

Parent Marilyn Sandborn agrees. “Outside of flag football, Coach Hernandez instills life lessons. In addition to teaching commitment and perseverance, he models encouragement, compassion, and community. He prepares these women for success in college and beyond by asking them how to continually challenge themselves, and players are recognized for their accomplishments both on and off the field.”

“Thank you, Coach Hernandez, for teaching and helping these females develop as athletes and as people,” said Mason Cathey Brady, Executive Director of PCA-Tampa Bay, the local Chapter of Positive Coaching Alliance. “We appreciate your commitment to our mission and our community.”

Positive Coaching Alliance will name twenty-five (25) National Double-Goal Coach® recipients, each of whom will receive $1,000 and two (2) tickets to the National Youth & Sports Awards in California in April 2020.
