“In May 2018, I injured myself during tumbling. I ended up tearing my anterior crucial ligament (ACL). My injury required surgery and a 12-month recovery. This injury after my first season being on Varsity was heartbreaking. One moment I was practicing frequently during the off-season with my fellow teammates to prepare for my second year of varsity cheer; and the next moment I was attending doctor appointments to prepare for my surgery. Although my injury hindered my participation on the cheer mat, it did not stop me from participating off the cheer mat. I immediately knew that the cheerleading team was my family, and I was determined to still make a difference on the team. I attended every cheer practice for the season, and I took videos of the team so that they would be able to look at their progress. This was a great experience to take notes on what my coach observed and to give feedback. I would work with the girls by showing them videos of how to correctly do the motions, and practice with them before or after cheer events. Not only that, but before the girls would go on the mat to perform at cheer competitions, I gave girls pep talks and reminded them how capable they truly are. The event of tearing my ACL was unfortunate, but I gained a leadership role that not everyone gets to experience. I obtained an opportunity to improve the cheer routine, helped the cheerleaders on and off the mat, and prevailed with a new perspective on cheerleading.” -Morgan
